Leaving Paradise

This is a mostly though not always a gentle book of exploration. It is my most popular work as well. Zenan is a good person and prefers to use his brains than his weapons. He lives on a world of paradise and wins a prize to leave and explore in the fastest ships created. His ship is controlled by an intelligent AI. What he encounters will change him and his world. Captured, disarmed, alone he must escape and return home, but how? How will the experiences of the explorers change his world of paradise?

Available in ebook at £ 1.99 and Paperback at £7.99

The Deserted World

This is the third story I have published. It is the sequel to 'Once Understood' and carries on directly where the first book finishes. Zarle, Jazer and their team are resting in City Batrel when Jazer's sister escapes. The mission to discover the orgin to their species beginnings will take them off world. Many will perish in the fight for the new world until the final devastating ending hundreds of years later. A resolution few imagined.

Available in ebook £1.99 and Paperback at £7.99
Once Understood

This is an intensely violent book compared to Leaving Paradise. Zarle and Jazer and their comrades are skilled with weapons and will use them for their cause. They want to create a paradise. The task is almost impossible. They are nicknamed 'The Impossible People.' Zarle must complete mission after deadly mission for his people. One mission will involve uncovering the mystery to human origins on their world.
This is a two part story. The sequel is called 'The Deserted World.'

Available in ebook at £1.99 and Paperback at £8.99

'Sergun's Mission'

This is the fourth novel I've publised. There are no assault rifles or space travel in this novel. No dragons or elves. Lots of sword fighting and travelling. Former General Sergun is bought out of retirement to find a missing woman who is in the alien Keratha lands. On the journey to locate her he will encounter old friends and start a war between Tharne and the Four Cities. The young woman they aim to rescue is harder to find than they believe and carries a secret.

'Blog' (updated 02/02/2025)

9th February 2025

Well it's been a two year gap without posting here. I'm in the same boring but safe job. I've been playing computer games. Keeping fit and am still aiming to publish book number five. Holiday last year was back to my place of birth: Wales, land of lovely mountains and people. I'm still reading mainly novels when I find the time.
My latest novel is about four people who are given a mission to track down and bring back a traitor who has stolen a special spacecraft from his civilisation.

14th January 2023

A belated Happy New Year. Our family was away over Christmas and New year staying in Norway with a friend of my wife. What an amazingly beautiful country Norway is and what a wonderful host she was. Also her house we stayed in was like out of a holywood movie set in Christmas! We had a day trip to Sweden which included a cable car ride to the top of an unbelievably cold mountain where queuing for 20 minutes outside to enter the restaurant made use close to freezing to death so we went back down and eventually warmed up in the cafe at the bottom which was stunning food with friendly staff. We had four flights and visited three airports. Norway in Winter at minus 30 C is a magical place to visit. Our host was also an excellent driver!

29th August 2022

Summer holidays are nearly finished. My son will be going to secondary school soon. We had a nice break in England at the coast and visited beaches, restaurants, amusements, castles and took a ride on a boat. My fifth book is still being edited and improved.

28th July 2022

Over halfway through the year already.  My fifth novel is vastly improved since the beginning of the year but is still missing something. I've been busy at work. I work for the government UK.  We are going for a holiday tomorrow. I miss my parents.

30th April 2022

That's a third of the year passed. Work is so dull and boring. We are having work on the house done (a new bathroom yay!). What an unbelievably stupid and horrific war is taking place in Ukraine. Russia is led by a brutal dictator who doesn't care how many civilians die as long as he gets control of more territory.

Work on my fifth novel progresses at a slow pace. I'm bored of reading and editiing  it now.

3rd January 2022

Well Happy New Year. We stayed down at a nice Hotel in London for my sister's wedding. Due to covid the Hotel was almost deserted.  So hope it goes better this year. I'm back to work tomorrow. I had a good rest off work. My fifth novel is still at the 99.1% completed stage. Which means I'm not happy about a few pages. We were going to sell our house but have decided to stay here and have work done to improve our place.
Keep safe all. Happy reading.

5th December 2021

Self publishing doesn't work for me. I have a fifth novel which is 98% complete still. I've reworked it many times but feel no motivation to publish it at present. Another version of Covid is about. Feels like wearing masks when out and being vaccinated is the new norm.
I'm still working from home. My sister is getting married in December so down to London we will go. Keep safe all.

21st March 2021

I am still working on my fifth novel. This is currently on draft number seven.
It's off to my test readers as soon as possible. I hope everyone is keeping safe. I had my fist Covid-19 vaccination yesterday and fell asleep in the afternoon for three hours and am aching all over today. I'm glad I had the vacine.

12th Feb 2021

I tested positive for COVID-19 and am recovering now and back to 90% fitness. I've worked half shifts this week and am back to work full time next week. I did not have to go to hospital but was lying in bed exhausted while I had it. Writing wise I've just today updated my novel Once Understood with a brand new edited edition. The characters are the same but a few chapters have been removed and a slight re ordering of other chapters and it works more smoothly now I hope. My latest science fiction work is still not ready for publication.  Keep safe all

16th January 2021

Well a belated Happy New Year!

We have had a lockdown Christmas and New year. My fifth novel is still unfinished.
My wife has COVID-19 and I'm waiting for my test results.
One of my already published works has been rewritten, edited and will be republished shortly. My full time work is ok and I'm still working at home. Due to COVID-19 and lockdown my son is also being home schooled for now. I haven't given in on writing but it's moving at a slower pace for now. I will aim to update this blog every few weeks this year. Keep safe all.

22nd July 2020

It's the summer holidays in the UK now so I'm looking after my nine year old son. I've been reading the excellent novel by Lavie Tidhar 'Unholy Land'. He's a living writer I admire as many I enjoy have passed away. I will publish again but not until I'm happier with my latest rewrite. Life must go on. I never realised there was so much paperwork involved when your parent's leave this world behind!

26th May 2020

Life goes on. With both my parent's dying focusing on writing is harder than ever. If I publish my latest work it will be the last novel for a while.  I need a break.

May 8th 2020

Reviews are coming in from my first readers outside of my family of my latest novel 'Sergun's Mission'. They are all (so far!) positive which is a joy to read. It's my first  fantasy with swords and horses rather than spacehips and off world adventures. A single positive review is lovely to read, gaining several truly is a joy. This encourages me to continue writing. One reader pointed out a word error in the story and I have corrected this. Thanks for their keen eye! I'm back in spaceships in my fifth novel which is infamously 99% complete. Quite how long it will take to finish the final one per cent I wouldn't like to say!

March 27th 2020

My wonderful dad Andy has died of cancer. It was his funeral yesterday and time to send off a lovely, irreplaceable person. One important relative was absent. His wife and my mum. She was meant to attend but could not be found. She was critically ill and  was rushed to the hospital where she died on the same day of a broken heart. They were married for 56 years. So my loved dad was buried yesterday and it will be my poor mum's funeral next. RIP my wonderful parents Andy and Viv. What an unforgettable and awful day we all had.

I know the terrible coronavirus has spread around the world and killed many people in several countries. All I can say from a lockdown household is keep safe. My son misses school and being with his friends. I am designated as a key worker as is my wife.

March 1st 2020

The year marches on slowly. Already in March. Easter upon us next. Storms have taken their toll on our bamboos. Let's hope they can fight back! Writing wise I'm slowly making progress on the work provisionally titled 'Seers World'. I hope to find more reviews and sales this year.

4th January 2020

Happy New Year to all good people and readers! Last year's new year's resolutions have mostly been achieved. I remain at a good weight, have received positive book reviews but failed to publish as many novels as I hoped. Family concerns drive down my writing. My fifth novel is still a work in progress. I'm positive I'll release it this year and before April would be nice.
World wise there's global warming. Trump, now Johnson, Putin and Duterte along with numerous other extremely unpleasant leaders in power. I've no idea what will happen this year.  I'll keep on working and part time writing

30th November 2019

I've been working on my latest story for publication but I'm not happy with releasing it yet. I've pruned 25,000 words, made numerous changes to the pace, conversations and events. This will be released in 2020. I wanted to publish three books this year but my fifth novel remains a 'work in progress'.....

13th October 2019

I made a few changes to 'The Deserted World'. I do take on board any legitimate criticism. I'm still working on my fifth novel. Editing, pruning and deleting. I refuse to release any novel I am unhappy with. Quality not quantity of output is what I'm aiming for. The agents in this latest story are tasked with destroying or capturing their stolen ship and finding and killing the man who betrayed them. They are armed with awesome weapons and trained to kill but killing innocent people is unacceptable. Meza, Ghee, Ketoscik and Gera are the agents. I would not like to be their enemy!

29th September 2019

Reviews have arrived for the sequel to the 'Once Understood', 'The Deserted World' and they are primarily positive. Phew! Comments such as 'Four stars for the sheer imagination it took to write this novel' please me greatly. There are negative comments from one reviewer as well. If you do find errors in the writing or story please fill in the form below and let me know. As I've said before, having public reviews by people I have never met is thrilling. If there's anything I can improve in a published story I will.

I'm still working on book five. Editing, pruning, changing for improvement. These are all new characters not seen before.  Four agents are sent to a world to prevent a war.
I will say no more at this stage but yes it is science fiction again!

August 30th 2019

It's still summer holidays for children in the UK. I remember the long summer days, trips to the sea side (did not travel beyond the UK with family until I was 18 and went to Greece). Back to the present and I'm still working, editing, rewriting and improving another science fiction novel. This is taking  time. It will be a standalone novel and set in the same universe as 'Leaving Paradise', 'Once Understood' and 'The Deserted World.' It is set around four hundred years after the events in 'Leaving Paradise.' I hope to publish it this year but will not unless it's good enough!

August 9th 2019

It's summer holidays in the UK, looking after my son and working. Work on any fresh stories is non existent. I'm slowly editing something I wrote many years ago seeing if it's salvagable. I've got my first reviews of 'Once Understood' on Amazon which are highly positive and lifted my mood.  My IT job is fine though boring. Weather in Cambridge has varied between 38 C and 9 C and torrential rain. Getting in the car in the incredibly hot weather was near torture - 40 C and it was hard to hold the steering wheel until it cooled down. The madness of Brexit looms.

June 23rd 2019

Sorry for no posts for two months!  Hard to accept so long has passed since I last updated this site. Working, family concerns and other issues have delayed my writing for now.
I've had excellent feedback in my first public reviews of my debut novel so that's a great experience. I wrote novels hoping to entertain, thrill and create memorable characters and events. The feedback is I've achieved that.  I didn't update this site when the author Gene Wolfe passed away. He is a incredible writer, and was one of several who inspired me to create my own worlds. Thanks to those who have rated my first novel. It means something to have positive feedback online as well as in real life!

April 19th 2019

Sergun's Mission is finally released in both ebook and paperback format. This is my fourth novel. This is an adventure story bringing a team to find a missing girl who is believed to be in alien territory. The mission to find her will take Sergun and his friends across the world. She is not all she seems and finding her is going to be harder than he believed. Finding her will unravel a greater puzzle. If you want swords and fighting. Aliens and travel. Friendship and heroism. Twists and turns. I hope this finds new and happy readers. It's my first fantasy book.

April 7th 2019

Final edits of my latest novel are underway. Due for publication in a week. Sergun's Mission is available for pre order at £1.99. (Ebook only for now). This is a sword and shield adventure with aliens and adventure. It's not the start of a trilogy but a one off book and complete story in under 100,000 words. I've spent five hours of today editing and gradually it lurches to completion....

March 2019

An excellent book cover has been found for my latest novel. The likely name is 'Sergun's Mission'. This is a story unlike any other I have published. There's no space travel, no spaceships and men mostly fight with swords and axes. Former Army commander Sergun receives a letter ordering him to travel with a party to locate a missing girl. This journey will lead him on an adventure beyond his lands, dealing with feared alien Keratha and human foes. Hope to publish before the end of March. Final proof reading ongoing!

February

Another month nearly zips by. Where did it go, and why did it go so fast?
I travelled up north for a conference in Newcastle. Stepped off the train and it was a cold night, walked down 10 minutes of deserted streets to find the Hotel. Lovely sleep and the conference was great. Night view from my Hotel window below.
Sword and fighting story is so close to finishing I'm excited!
This will be my fourth published work and is set in another world than previous novels of mine.

End of January Update

New Job so far is all great. Everyone is nice and professional. No shouting and stress. Lovely view of river in Cambridge and large quiet office with long corridors, multiple elevators and secure doors.
Writing wise I haven't had much time. My fantasy story is up for publication in February.
Sergun is due to be unleashed in the early part of this year! it still needs improving style wise.

2019 January

Starting a new job. This week off to London, Norwich and Ipswich. Not much time to write for now! Sergun's story is my next work to be published. Suspect my next work will be delayed until March.I've reduced the price of two of my ebooks to £0.99. Hope whoever buys them enjoys the stories!
Bye for now!

26th December

I've created an account over at Goodreads. Here is my profile:
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/17936080.Paul_A_Jones

20th December Update

One of my editors is reading 'Sergun's Story' and the feedback so far is excellent.
Holiday break will put this back until next year.

10th December Update

Had a book sale at the weekend gave away copies of 'Once Understood' for free. This achieved a few more sales as well. It got to number '23' in the science fiction charts on free science fiction! I'm still editing and writing 'Sergun's Tale.'

3rd December Update.

It will soon be Christmas. Hope everyone has a lovely time!
Sergun's Tale will not be published until I start my new job.
It is so close to completion as well. Needs a cover and my proof readers to do their part. Hint hint!

SERGUN'S TALE (13th November)

This will be my fourth published book when I finish it. There are still two scenes missing and some of the facts in the story are being double checked. I've said this was going to be a fantasy story but maybe it's not. There's no magic in it. Everything is explained. There are three species on the Sergun's world: humans, divided into tribes and nations. Sergun represents Tharne. There are also the fearsome alien Keratha and the powerful alien Galls. Into this world Sergun is brought out of retirement to locate a missing girl in the alien lands. His mission is going to be anything but easy!

JOB

I've found a fresh job in IT. When I start it I estimate my next book if published will surface next year or maybe 2020!

SELF PUBLISHING

I'm self published via Amazon. I hope the covers of the books, the stories inside and the writing is enjoyable. I currently can't afford to pay a professional editor to work on my books. So, I, along with two family members have edited and proof read my stories for which they receive a percentage. (Currently a very small amount!). If you do find errors in the writing please let me know. In books of roughly 100,000 words it is almost impossible to release a book with no spelling mistakes or word errors.

Update 22nd October.

Work on my now unpublished 96,000 word novel continues, slowly as I'm out of work, looking for a job and it's half term so my son is at home as well.

FANTASY FICTION

I don't recall reading many fantasy works during my teenage years. If I read at all literature wise then it was horror like the excellent Stephen King and for fantasy I can only remember the absolutely wonderful and missed Ursula Le Guin. I've made up for it since and read many works of fantasy over the last twenty years.
All fiction is fantasy. I've written stories set in the modern world of Earth but they are not good enough for publication. My first published work of fantasy fiction is coming out soon. It concerns several characters, the primary one is the former General Sergun, taken out of retirement and ordered to locate a missing girl believed to be held by the alien Keratha. Finding her will be anything but easy. Finding her will uncover a greater mission.
I hope to publish this work before October 2018.

SCIENCE FICTION V HARD SCIENCE FICTION

I write stories. They are not set on Earth. The science in them is not based around our current technology. I know we can't travel in hyperspace, but I need to get my characters to different worlds before thousands or millions of years have passed. We don't have AIs that can run all our systems. I try to make my stories as realistic as possible. Characters can't jump off a ten storey building and land alive without equipment.  My characters won't float in space without a suit on and breathe ok. There are rules in my stories and the characters can't perform magical actions.

THE DESERTED WORLD

'The Deserted World' is the sequel to 'Once Understood.' There was no way to fit all of the plot, characters and consequences into a single book and publish via amazon. Each is near 100,000 words long. The story continues directly on from 'Once Understood' and ends centuries later in a conclusion I don't wish to spoil for anyone. There's still war, revenge, love and plenty of action. Even poetry and marriage. The story began in 'Once Understood' by Idhouri is completed. His wish is almost fulfilled but not in the way he imagined or hoped. That's it finished. It's a two part story but not five books or nine to read!

PRICES OF MY BOOKS

A few people (thanks!) have requested paperbacks as they don't read ebooks. I've published the first three books in both ebook and paperback format. The price of £7.99 for a paperback may sound expensive. From that sale I make less than £1. I'm not getting rich here! £7.99 is not greed but anything less and I make no income from writing.

I'm also running promotions on the ebooks. With no reviews available people are reluctant to spend £2.99 on an unknown author. Watch out for promotional prices of ebooks at £0.99!

ONCE UNDERSTOOD

'Once Understood' is in complete contrast to 'Leaving Paradise'. The characters in this novel want to live in paradise but know they have to fight to create it. They will fight with their hands and feet, guns and knives and bombs and whatever they can. Expect swearing, lots of action and pace. Jazer is Zarle's best friend. He is captured and imprisoned. While Zarle assassinates a group of enemies he is unaware Jazer is fighting for his life. Zarle will take a mission before going home which will nearly be the death of him. This is a nasty story told with humour at times.  If violence, rape, torture and swearing turns you off then please don't read this book. The life of a professional assassin even for a worthy cause is not a story for a child to read or someone who is easily offended.

LEAVING PARADISE

Leaving Paradise was a book written as a reaction to the many science fiction books I read when I was in my twenties. Before home use of the internet was common . So many novels had protagonists who were police officers, military and security officials investigating crimes. I wanted a story in which the main character loves his life and home. He is reluctant to leave. He comes from a world with no prisons or police. He travels with a smart spacecraft and is so excited to find a planet he can walk on runs off without his main weapon!
Zenan is a sweet, charming and kind person. Later in the story his aggressive side is shown and he even becomes a reluctant warrior. If you don't like swearing and want a nice character then Leaving Paradise is almost the ideal story of mine.

IDEAS

Where do ideas come from? Garbage in and garbage out is the phrase. I've read thousands of books and have learnt what works and what doesn't. Working in jobs at the same time means sometimes my stories go on hold for months or years. I wrote my first thirty page story when at school. Some incarnations of my stories have been around since Windows 95! It's time to publish a few and see if anyone likes them. They have been extensively polished, trimmed and worked on before publication!

Paul Jones

I was born in Wales long ago and moved around a few times when young due to my dad working in the UK Armed Forces. I left School at 16 as I wanted to earn money. Three years working for the civil service convinced me to go college. Since finishing University I've worked in IT jobs.
I've travelled in Asia and visited different countries in Europe. My current home though is not far from London.

I'm a married man with one son. Unlike my character's I don't carry guns, swords or fly spaceships! The only guns in my house are our Nerf guns! Thanks to my wife and son for their support with my writing.
